The stunt was a huge success, though, so Origin PC has made a new version that people can actually buy. Something in the same vein, anyway.
Yeah, we would have preferred an Xbox One X too. The new machine uses original console hardware, though you can choose to upgrade the Xbox or PlayStation's stock hard drive to a faster SSD.
Both 'halves' of the Big O have their own power connections and HDMI ports so that you can run them simultaneously and, if necessary, on separate TVs or monitors.
In addition, you can opt for an Elgato 4K60 Pro capture card which, as its name suggests, can capture 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay from your compartmentalized console.
How much will all of this cost? It depends. Follow all the latest news from CES here! A prototype of the PS4 model landed in our lab at the end of , and despite not nearly enough play time with it and some annoying prerelease glitches, I still kind of want the PS4 version.
But I don't own a console or streaming setup, so I fit the profile of the relatively small pool of potential buyers for this scaled-back version.
You can order it beginning today. First, an optional Elgato 4K60 Pro card that goes on the console side is one of the few ways to breach the divide between the left and right brain of the Big O; it can capture video directly from the console to the PC's drive, which can be a great convenience for people who want to edit their game footage.
Second, Origin can configure the consoles with SSDs rather than the stock spinning drives. Of course, those are both upgrades and setups you can put together yourself.
Plus, there are some notable downsides. But next-generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles are expected late this year, so who wants to buy the current models now?
If Origin had put the console in a slide-out enclosure and promised to make it upgradable to newer consoles, that might be different. I don't get what possible purpose there is for this, or what possible target audience.
It seems like a weird time to launch new hardware like this, when a new generation of consoles will be launching before the year is through.
That doesn't exactly seem like something one would pair with a multi-thousand dollar gaming PC. Could they not fit a One X in there? Also, the pricing is quite high for what you get.
